Early Life and Career

Olaf Scholz was born in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany, on June 14, 1958. He studied law at the University of Hamburg and became a lawyer in 1985. Scholz entered politics in the early 1980s, joining the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He served as a member of the Bundestag, the German parliament, from 1998 to 2001 and again from 2002 to 2011.

Political Career

Scholz held several ministerial positions in the government of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, including Minister of Labor and Social Affairs from 2002 to 2005 and Minister of the Interior from 2005 to 2007. In 2011, he was elected First Mayor of Hamburg, a position he held until 2018.

In 2018, Scholz was appointed Federal Minister of Finance in the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel. He also served as Vice-Chancellor of Germany from 2018 to 2021.

Chancellor Candidacy

In 2021, Scholz was nominated as the SPD's candidate for Chancellor in the 2021 German federal election. He ran on a platform of social justice, economic stability, and climate protection.
