Nick Ruller Is Stepping Down From Role As Councillor

Nick Ruller resigns as councillor

Former Black Country mayor and Willenhall North councillor Nick Ruller says it is time for a new chapter in his life

Nick Ruller made the announcement at a full council meeting on Wednesday (November 23), bringing to an end his 39 years of service to Walsall Council.

A clearly emotional Councillor Ruller said: “I have made the very difficult decision that the time is now right for me to step down from my role as a councillor – a role I have had the privilege of holding for almost four decades.

“This has not been an easy decision to make, but it is one that I believe is right for me, my family and Willenhall North. It is time for a new chapter in my life, and for a new councillor to represent the people of Willenhall North."

Councillor Ruller said he was "incredibly proud" of what he had achieved during his time as a councillor

“I have been incredibly proud to serve the people of Willenhall North for so many years, and I will always cherish the memories I have made during my time as a councillor.

“I would like to thank all of the people who have supported me over the years, especially my family and friends. I would also like to thank my fellow councillors, both past and present, for their support and guidance.

“I wish the new councillor who will represent Willenhall North all the best for the future. I know that they will do a great job of representing the people of this community."

Councillor Mike Bird, leader of the council, paid tribute to Councillor Ruller’s service

“Nick has been a dedicated and hardworking councillor for many years, and he will be greatly missed,” he said. “He has always been a passionate advocate for the people of Willenhall North, and he has made a real difference to the lives of many people in the community.

“On behalf of the council, I would like to thank Nick for his service and wish him all the best for the future.”

Councillor Ruller was first elected to Walsall Council in 1983

He served as mayor of the borough from 2002 to 2003, making history as the youngest person to hold the post. He was also a member of the council’s cabinet for many years, holding a number of different portfolios.

Nick Ruller's decision to stand down as a councillor is effective from December 31. A by-election will be held in the new year to elect a new councillor to represent Willenhall North.
