The Perseid Meteor Shower: When to See It and What to Expect

About the Perseid Meteor Shower

Every year, the Perseid meteor shower lights up the night sky from mid-July to mid- to late August, with its peak occurring on the morning of August 12th. This year, the shower will be slightly affected by the presence of the Moon, which will be in a 44 percent illuminated waxing crescent phase and setting around 11:30 PM local time. Despite this, the Perseid meteor shower is still expected to reach its peak during the overnight hours of late Sunday night into early Monday morning on August 12th, 2024.

Viewing Tips

To maximize your chances of seeing the Perseid meteor shower, find a location with minimal light pollution. Lie on your back and look up. Be patient and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness. It may take up to 30 minutes for your eyes to fully adapt. Avoid using your phone or other electronic devices, as the light from these devices can interfere with your night vision.

Origin of the Perseid Meteor Shower

The Perseid meteor shower is caused by debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle. As the comet orbits the Sun, it leaves a trail of dust and particles in its wake. When Earth passes through this debris field, these particles enter our atmosphere at high speeds and burn up, creating the streaks of light that we see as meteors.

What to Expect

During the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, you can expect to see up to 60 meteors per hour. The meteors will appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, which is located in the northeastern sky. However, you may be able to see meteors anywhere in the night sky.

Don't Miss It!

The Perseid meteor shower is a truly awe-inspiring sight. If you're lucky enough to be in a location with clear skies, be sure to take some time to look up and enjoy the show. And don't forget to make a wish!
