Justice Department Review Finds No Wrongdoing by Former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta

Investigation Stemmed from 2008 Plea Deal Involving Accused Sex Trafficker

OPR Concluded Acosta Acted Reasonably and Within Legal Authority

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has concluded that former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta did not violate any laws in his handling of a 2008 plea deal involving an accused sex trafficker. The review was conducted by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), which is tasked with investigating allegations of misconduct by DOJ employees.

The OPR's investigation focused on Acosta's role in the plea agreement that allowed Jeffrey Epstein, a wealthy financier, to avoid federal charges of sex trafficking minors. Acosta, who was then the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, has been criticized for the deal, which many believe was too lenient.

However, the OPR's review found that Acosta acted reasonably and within his legal authority when he negotiated the plea agreement. The review also found that Acosta did not engage in any misconduct or abuse of power.

The OPR's findings are a vindication for Acosta, who has denied any wrongdoing in his handling of the Epstein case. However, the review is unlikely to satisfy critics who believe Acosta should be held accountable for his actions.
