Have you ever wondered about the force that seems to push you outwards when you're driving around a curve or swinging on a merry-go-round? This perceived force, known as centrifugal force, has been a subject of debate in physics for centuries.

The Myth of Centrifugal Force

In classical mechanics, centrifugal force was once believed to be a real force responsible for the outward push experienced by objects in circular motion. However, modern physics has demonstrated that this force is merely an illusion, a consequence of viewing the motion from a rotating reference frame.

The True Explanation: Inertia

The outward push we feel is actually due to inertia, the tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion. As an object moves in a circular path, its velocity constantly changes direction. According to Newton's first law of motion, an object in motion will continue moving in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force. Therefore, the object's natural inclination is to continue moving in a straight line, which creates the illusion of an outward force pushing it away from the center of the circle.

This "centrifugal force" is simply the manifestation of the object's inertia in a rotating frame of reference.
