Breaking News: Rare Medieval Manuscript Sells for Record Price

10-Centuries-Old Text Fetches 2,250 Euros

Berlin, Germany (Reuters) - A rare 10-century-old manuscript of the Sachsenspiegel, a landmark medieval legal text, sold for a staggering 2,250 euros ($2,470) per sheet at an auction in Berlin on Wednesday, setting a new record for such a document.

The manuscript, which was severely damaged during World War II and subsequently underwent extensive restoration, is considered one of the most important legal texts of the Middle Ages.

Written by Eike von Repgow between 1220 and 1235, the Sachsenspiegel was a groundbreaking legal code that influenced legal systems across Europe. It established principles of civil and criminal law and provided guidance on land ownership, inheritance, and other legal matters.

The manuscript is one of only a few surviving copies of the original text, and its sale marks a significant milestone in the preservation of medieval history. The buyer, who remained anonymous, is believed to be a collector of rare manuscripts.
